About The Arts Council
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge was established in 1976 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to promote the arts in the Roanoke Valley and provide services to local cultural groups. Throughout the decades, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge has provided proactive leadership in which to maintain and strengthen the cultural activities of southwest Virginia. In the early 1990s, The Arts Council coordinated a planning process to determine the needs and priorities for the arts and cultural community. The resulting document: “Blueprint 2000” paved the way for a Master Plan entitled: “Arts, History, Science, Zoo: A Shared Cultural View” in 2001. The Arts Council held a follow-up conference “Cultural Summit 2005: Evolving for Survival” where alternative methods of funding for arts and cultural organizations were examined.
Today, The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge provides programs and services to 115 member organizations and more than 180 individual artists of all artistic disciplines. Programs and services include a regional cultural calendar, arts education programs, arts management workshops for member organizations and individual artists, directories and cultural tourism initiatives.
